Has anyone else noticed that with this awful cold weather they are in more pain ?

Especially my fingers, hands and feet I find have been worse this past week, or it
could just be co-incidence ? ?

OOOOh Rose - yes! Pain and also extreme discomfort with the cold. I'm trying to not get to the point where I'm so cold I feel ill and can't warm up (a new symptom for me since last winter!)

For days when I'm on break duty, I wear long sleeved thermal vest and longjohns - I kidded myself they don't look quite as comical in black! Then thermal socks, Ugg boots, wool trousers, shirt, jumper, big coat, hat, scarf and gloves!

I was thinking about you at work and wondering how you are getting on. Are you still managing to increase your hours on your graded return? Hope it is going ok for you Xx Ailsa

hi Rose,

definately feel more affected with the cold.

i went shopping last Wednesday and i forgot my gloves as i just have to get into my garage and car and then into Tesco's. the steering wheel was so cold that it hadn't warmed up by the time i got there with the heating full on in the car and then i had to grab a trolley which was absolutely freeeezing and my hands had turned purple by this time !!

we went out on Sunday to the garden centre to look at all the Christmassy things and i bought a pretty pair of pretty pink thermal bed socks to wear indoors not in bed .. would never imagined i would ever be buying these, so i look very fetching if anyone knocks on the door .. lol LOL

so my extremeties are definately feeling the cold and not functioning so well.

Hi Rose, Since this spate of cold weather I've noticed my finger joints are more swollen and painful. Since I was diagnosed with RA and OA I've definately felt the cold more,in fact I seem to be cold all the time except in bed at night and even then I have a hot water bottle and wear bed socks! Rose

You beat me to the post - I was going to ask exactly the same question. I sat at work all day yesterday. We had the heating on full blast, I had about five layers on and I could not get warm. The pain in my joints is really bad. I am currently sat at home today working with about seven layers on (my Daughter says I look like the mitchelin man), a hot water bottle on my knees and a dressing gown wrapped around my legs and I am still cold.

I believe the weather is going to get warmer by Friday. It is going to be a balmy 6 degrees in our area. Hurray!! Please go away Winter.

Take care and keep warm

Jackie

I'm almost sure this all has something to do with wonky immune systems. I don't seem to have a temp control anymore and am either boiling or freezing!! The cold weather doesn't seem to affect my joints much but the heat does! I always feel better the hotter it is. I have to admit to having three hot water bottles and an electric blanket over the past week or so to try and keep warm. Take care everyone.

Hi Rose,
Me too! Can't get my fingers to be very nimble at the moment, they're cold all the time and I've only 300 bars of soap to wrap and label before Saturday! Doing it in small batches to try to rest the hands but still very crampy with the cold, at least I can still grip the loo roll, which has been an issue at times. Foot pain is mildly better this week bizzarely but the chill blains are back with a vengeance in spite of the 2 pairs of thermal socks, oh, and don't tell Dave, but I've been putting the heating on during the day!
Keep warm all, those hot gel pocket warmers are good when you have to go out

Hi Sara - Is your company "So Soapy"? If so, the website is great and the soap looks amazing. I can't afford to import stuff from The Soap Opera in Wisconsin any more, and have decided to use So Soapy in future because I like the ethos of the company xx

Hi Rose,

You are so right, the cold does affect me more too. I am always cold have been since I started on the therapy drugs. I do not get much pain now unless I overdo things, but I have had lots of aches and pains in this cold weather. Think it's worse since being in the heat at the end of October. Like Jean I feel so much better when I am warm and the sunshine is superb, but it's a pity we cant have it all the time.

The sun looked lovely today, it made the snow sparkle but the temperature dropped to 15 below. Think I will invest in some thermals too. Hope you feel better soon.

Someone told me the Fire Service will check your electric blanket on an annual basis? Is this right, cos if it is I`m off to buy one!!

Jean,
You are better than Inspector Morse, and very kind about our website etc. We are So Soapy, mostly in the shower of course, and not right now, another break from wrapping at the mo. But I've been trying out some new wrist splints today and my hands aren't as cold or maybe its the sneaky having the heating on idea?! I may try it again tomorrow just to make sure.

Crikey Sara, how can you NOT have the heating on during the day?
I feel the cold a lot more than I used to before RA (or maybe I'm just getting old ?Scared ). When my joints get cold now they are more painful.
I'm going to have a look at your website Sara. By the way have you tried fingerless gloves?

Off to buy an electric blanket now for the fire brigade to check. LOL

Love, Doreen xx

Hi

One thing with the RA is temperature regulation is an issue. When I get cold it takes forever to warm through. when i get too hot it takes ages to cool down.

The biting "tooth ache" pain is much worse when I am chilled to the bone.... but much much worse is cold PLUS damp.

brrrrrrr

If I dont want to put the heating on, lighting a couple of candles in the room and shutting the door is a help- or giving the heating an extra boost.

We had the house insulated a couple of yrs ago on the government scheme and it has made a difference.

the foam stuff blown in the cavity.

My Hands and feet tend to be hot stuff with internal joint radiators....Sad

Never mind

Hi all

As Jenni and Jean say, they beat me to it, temperature regulation can be a problem in RA. Disease activity in joints and subsequent inflammation can lead to increased body temperature. Also certain drugs can affect the mechanism controlling bodily temperature. Raynaud's Syndrome, can occur alongside RA, and is an interruption of blood flow to the extremities caused by constriction of the blood vessels. This can leave you with very cold hands and feet to the point where they change colour from pink to purple to white and back again.

I like warmth and have an electric blanket, and microwarmers and a fleecy dressing gown. I think the answer is to simply wrap up well at all times. It may not be "de rigeur" but heyho who really cares, as long as we're warm and not putting up with unnecessary pain!!

Let me know when the firemen are visiting Jean ... I'll pop by!Love

Hi,

I agree with you all about the cold it makes my joints much more painful. When the weather is like this I have to break the ice on the water for the sheep who even though they are inside still have their water freeze up. I am having to carry water for them as it has frozen up where they are so it is another chore. Still if I get really cold I just put my hands in their fleeces and get warmed up. I wish I had a thick wooly coat like them as they do not seem to mind it at all.

My temperature regulation is way off and sometimes even in this weather can get too hot at night even in a room without heating. I find I am better when it is cooler like the spring rather than extremes of hot or cold.

I hope that this weather passes soon and we don't get any more for a while. I don't want a white christmas!

Hope you are all ok in this cold spell and if I don't post on here again before Christmas wish you all a painfree Christmas.

Jayne
